What resolving an identifier means

There is no central directory of who holds an account where. The only way to find out whether a handle exists on a platform is to ask that platform, one at a time. Fanning out is that asking, done in parallel: 581 checks for a username, 18 for an email address, 5 for a phone number, each answered by the site itself rather than by a list someone compiled once.

Because the answer comes from the platform, it is current: a handle registered this morning is found this morning, one deleted last week comes back absent. That is the difference between resolving an identifier and searching an index of it.

What a profile can hand you next

A profile usually names other identifiers - a second handle, a contact address, a link to another site. Each is a query in its own right, so a trail can be followed by hand as far as it goes.

What comes back is only what the platform shows the public. This reads profiles that anyone could open, at scale and in one place. It does not sign in, and it holds nothing a platform keeps private.
